Carbon markets: A crucial mechanism in our fight on climate change or another example of imperialism?
PhD student, University of Essex
Start of the project: October 2012
Abstract: As we move into a new era of global climate mitigation, a supra-national market approach appears to be the favored route. The impact these markets will have on a global, national and local scale have long been contested, with many critics labeling the UN-FCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism a form of ‘carbon-colonialism’. Unequal distribution of projects, profits and carbon credit producers have led to the legitimacy of the carbon market to be questioned. In a world hungry of energy does the carbon market mechanism hold the key to sustainability? Or it is another method of the North controlling the South?
